Theodore J. Spaulding – author portrait

Theodore J. Spaulding once served twenty years in the trenches of “Operation: Dialogue Research,” a covert mission better known to civilians as bartending. Under cover of lime wedges and top-shelf distractions, he eavesdropped, empathized, and gathered a thousand lives’ worth of stories—some confessions, some catastrophes, all true. He called it intel. Others called it listening.

Off-duty, he trained with archers and monks, wandered the philosophical wilds, and read fantasy novels like survival manuals. He once studied Wu Style Tai Chi under a mainland master on the misty slope of Haleakalā, nursing a body broken in a catastrophic accident that would have ended most field agents’ service. Instead, he rebuilt himself, slowly—one breath, one form, one truth at a time.

Today, Spaulding writes epic fantasy with the scars of the real world embedded in its bones. His books don’t offer easy answers. They offer hard-won reckonings—about power, pain, mercy, and the long shadow of choice. There are swords and songs, yes. But also the kind of evil that doesn’t wear armor, and the kind of hope that doesn’t arrive on horseback.

When he isn’t writing, Spaulding lives in Southern California with his wife and four children, perfecting the art of stealth pancake making and strategic Lego deployment. The mission continues.

“Contrary to the popular opinion of the Children of the Chosen, the Trials are just as effective in determining the Class of an oppilas who is totally unprepared for them as one who has been prepared all his life.”
